Antonelli charges from 19th to win Italian Grand Prix at Monza
Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 6 September after starting 19th on the grid. He passed Mercedes teammate George Russell late in the race and finished 3.857 seconds ahead; Max Verstappen took third.
An engine penalty pushed Antonelli toward the back for the start, but he made rapid progress through the field. A midrace virtual safety car allowed him to change tyres under caution, while Russell continued on older tyres. Antonelli recovered from a brief trip through the gravel during his late pursuit and completed the decisive pass with only a few laps remaining.
The result was a home victory built on overtaking, tyre strategy and a strong closing stint. Russell secured second for a Mercedes one-two, while Verstappen completed the podium.
