Vithya Ramraj Breaks National Record as India Wins Eight Asian Games Medals on Day 10

A record on a rain-hit day

Vithya Ramraj ran 54.75 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Monday, taking bronze and bettering P. T. Usha’s longstanding Indian record of 55.42 seconds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Her finish was part of an eight-medal day for India, six of them in athletics, despite rain interrupting the schedule.

Athletics leads the tally

Yashvir Singh claimed men’s javelin silver with a final-attempt throw of 85.72 metres, while Rohit Yadav took bronze with 84.35m. Murali Sreeshankar earned men’s long jump silver at 8.07m, and Gulveer Singh ran a personal best 3:36.72 for silver in the 1500m. Parul Chaudhary added women’s 5000m bronze. Ramraj’s hurdles bronze completed the six athletics podium places. The results show the breadth of the track and field performance, from distance running to jumps and throws.

Shooting and kurash add medals

Esha Singh took silver in the women’s 25m pistol after a final that required shoot-offs. Pincky Balhara won bronze in women’s under-78kg kurash. Those two results took Monday’s medal gain to eight. The day’s published tally stood at 39 medals for India, comprising four gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze; that figure can change as the Games continue.

Rain changes the cricket schedule

India’s men’s cricket quarter-final against Afghanistan was washed out, and India advanced to the semifinals without play. Tennis also faced interruptions. In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya moved into the semifinals, guaranteeing at least bronze under the competition format, although those assured medals are separate from Monday’s eight completed podium results. Ramraj’s national record remains the day’s most striking individual milestone.
