Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live: What Voice Can Do in Each App
Google’s new voice features in Gmail, Docs and Keep let people talk through tasks instead of typing a command and waiting for a text reply. Launched in September 2026, the tools have different purposes: finding details in an inbox, building a document and organizing a stream of thoughts into notes.
What does Gmail Live do?
Gmail Live offers conversational search across your inbox. You could ask for the gate number in a flight message or details from a recent school email without remembering the sender or subject line. Its value is in locating a specific answer buried in a long thread. Check the cited message before acting on a time-sensitive detail.
What does Docs Live do?
Docs Live is a hands-free writing partner. Speak through an idea, ask it to structure a draft, then refine the tone or organization in conversation. Google says it can use relevant details from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web with permission. A practical first test is to dictate the outline of a report and compare it with a blank-page approach.
What does Keep Live do?
Keep Live turns a spoken brain dump into organized notes or lists. That suits scattered ideas: errands, meeting follow-ups or a study plan. The point is capture first, tidy second. Review the resulting list to make sure important names and dates survived the transformation.
Who can use the features?
Google says Gmail and Keep voice features are available for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Docs Live is for Pro and Ultra. The company said the features were rolling out and would come to Workspace business customers. If an expected control is missing, the plan and rollout status are the first things to check.
How is this different from dictation?
Traditional dictation turns speech into text. These tools aim to interpret a request and work with the context of an app: find an email answer, develop a structured document or transform rough thoughts into a useful note. The distinction matters when choosing what to ask. Give a concrete goal and relevant context, then inspect the output.
In short: use Gmail Live to find, Docs Live to develop and Keep Live to capture. Access varies by Google AI plan, and the three tasks are more useful to compare than the shared “voice AI” label.
