India prepares October drive to clear pending matters and improve public offices

India’s central ministries are preparing a month-long administrative campaign to address pending references, improve records management and clean public offices. The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) says the implementation phase of Special Campaign 6 will run from October 2 to 31, following preparations from September 16 to 30.

Departments have appointed and trained nodal officers across their offices, public sector undertakings and autonomous bodies. The preparatory work includes identifying pending matters, selecting offices for the cleanliness drive, assessing electronic waste and deciding how to dispose of it. DARPG also lists preservation of historical records and better use of office space among the planned activities.

At a review meeting, more than 40 senior officers attended in person and more than 800 joined virtually from over 500 locations, according to the government. Representatives covered 84 ministries and departments and associated offices. Targets for the preparatory phase are being uploaded to a dedicated campaign portal.

The campaign’s scale is an official target, not an outcome already achieved. The practical test will come during October: whether departments actually reduce pending work and manage records and waste as planned.
