Mumbai Port Authority plans phased road upgrades for growing traffic

Mumbai Port Authority has begun a phased programme to improve roads in its estate as traffic volumes rise. The authority says the network handles about 9,200 commercial vehicles a day, alongside passenger and port cargo traffic.

The authority appointed IIT Bombay as design and project management consultant. In the first phase, it invited tenders for about 2.6 kilometres of road from Sewri Junction to Mahul. A second phase is proposed for a major stretch from NTOB to Sewri.

It also commissioned design work for a steel bridge at Kharoo Creek to address disruption caused by a closure there. The authority said the road network was built largely on reclaimed land and now carries more traffic than its original design capacity, with Atal Setu changing regional movement patterns.

The stated award and completion dates are plans, not finished work. Commuters should consult current local traffic advisories for any road closures or diversions; the announcement does not provide a live traffic map.
